The reason why Urban had 20 WR in this last class

Meyer: Gators will play without RBs if no one steps upAssociated Press

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer threatened Tuesday to play without a running back if someone doesn't step up at the position.

Meyer said a strong running game is critical to the success of his spread-option offense, and inconsistent play from tailbacks DeShawn Wynn, Markus Manson, Kestahn Moore and Skyler Thornton was one reason the Gators struggled to score last season.

Meyer vowed to not let it happen again.

He said he gets upset just thinking about the position.

He said he'd just as soon play without a tailback. He didn't mince any words. As he put it: "I'm not going to sit and watch that trash I watched last year. That's not going to happen."

The Gators carried an average 146 yards a game in 2005 -- well shy of the 236 yards a game Meyer's ground game produced in his final year at Utah.

The demise of the highly touted spread offense. Gotta love it.

Did he forget he is now in the SEC, a conference known for not giving up alot of rushing yards.

The spread will not work in the SEC!!! I can't scream that loud enough. That's why his offense stunk all year, they decided to go back to the I toward the second half of the year and they got much better.

I understand the point you trying to make but i don't agree, one the SEC does give up rushing yards last year Williams and Brown from Auburn. Second the spread offense does work in the SEC. Look who won it Georgia what did they run. Third give the coach a second to bring in his personnel look at what a spread team done to the SEC champion. Here are some stats to look at West Virginia a spread team. Rushes-yards 63-382

Re: The reason why Urban had 20 WR in this last class

Lets see, Ronnie Brown and Caddy were in the nfl last season, Georgia runs a pro style offense with the tight end being a major part of the offense, they may run some spread but they arent a spread team and there is a difference between a spread such as oklahoma's spread and urban meyers spread option.

You can say that west virginia beat the crap out of georgia with that type of offense but then you can look at the best teams in the land year after year and usually only pro style offenses win. The exception is Texas but how many times does a Vince Young come around and how many teams have had a worse defense than USC to defend against him.

i like what larry bird is saying: give meyer time to get HIS type of athletes at florida and you'll see the same results as he had at utah. look at spurrier right now at south carolina, give him 2-3 years there to get in his type of personnel and they'll be near the top of the SEC too.
